Real World Epoxies offers a selection of Jaxxon and Scubapoxy coatings that have been tested under the potable water standard
(AS/NZS 4020:2018)
and are safe for use in contact with drinking water.
Being safe for drinking water means our coatings pass the following criteria:
Taste:
A trained panel tastes water extracts to determine if the coatings release compounds that have a detectable taste.
Appearance:
Water that has been in contact with the coatings is examined for any increase in colour or turbidity.
Growth
of aquatic micro-organisms:
Coatings are examined for the ability to support bacterial growth by monitoring dissolved oxygen levels.
Mutagenic
activity:
An AMES test is used to determine if the coatings release mutagenic compounds (which are compounds that can induce genetic
mutation).
Cytotoxic
activity:
Water extracts are tested for cytotoxicity (which is the ability to damage mammalian cells).
Metals:
Water extracts are examined for the release of aluminium, arsenic, copper, iron, lead, mercury and other metals.
High
temperature tests:
Coatings in contact with hot water are tested at higher temperatures.
Organic
compounds:
Water extracts are analysed for organic compounds using USEPA methods.
